CASTLES AND HERITAGE

There are several National Trust properties that we would recommend worth visiting. Closest to The Dunavon is Castle Fraser, one of the grandest Scottish baronial tower houses and built in 1575. Other castles worth wandering around in Aberdeenshire include Crathes, Craigievar, Drum and Fyvie. Simply log onto www.nts.org.uk

Kildrummy Castle is open April to October. This 13th century stone courtyard castle was modelled on the Chateau de Coucy in Lyons, France. Although a ruin, it is well worth a visit with a restaurant and beautiful gardens. The gardens have a unique collection of alpines and shrubs in a landscaped setting, boasts plenty of walks, a children’s play area and plants for sale.
